About the Author
Phyllis Horner, PhD, is on a mission to help people change their thinking and take action to find fulfillment at work, no matter what their age. She grew up in the era where fitting in was expected, and learned the hard way that breaking out is the key to real career success and gravitas. An organizational psychologist, she is based in Honolulu, Hawaii. She's a speaker, motivator, coach and author. Phyllis grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, worked her way through college, and then moved to Michigan, where she earned a PhD from Wayne State University. She worked for Ford Motor Company for several years, helping to design career, performance, and employee engagement systems. After 10 icy winters, Phyllis moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, and declared that she had "won the life lottery." She holds many certifications for psychological assessments including MBTI, DiSC, and the Birkman Assessment. Timely, clear and upbeat

In her timely new book, Phyllis gives us a readable, encouraging guide to identify our most fulfilling career options. Everyday I see the need and the opportunities for women to step up and "lean in". We all can benefit from her outstanding expertise in business coaching as she walks us through the clearly useful steps to discover and claim our own true career powers. Thank you, Dr. Horner!

View work as a 'vehicle' for self-expression

The author Phyllis Horner is a practicing organizational psychologist. Do you know what that means? Well, I didn't so I looked it up. And for your info, in case you didn't know this either: Industrial and organizational psychology (also known as I–Opsychology, occupational psychology, work psychology, WOpsychology, IWO psychology and business psychology) is the scientific study of human behavior in the workplace and applies psychological theories and principles to organizations and individuals in their workplace. So there! Now we can begin.
Phyllis says that the metaphor of being in the driver's seat of your career and viewing work as a "vehicle" for self-expression in the world helps us to see that no matter how seriously we take any given job, we find meaning from it to the extent it matches our personal values and goals. That viewpoint puts a completely different spin on what many people see as a necessary evil, 'needing a job to pay the bills.'
Phyllis has taught hundreds of workshops in about 30 years of her professional career so she is well qualified to give advice and she does so in an easy and fun way. I particularly like all the personal stories throughout the book which illustrate her points very well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is rethinking her or his career .. at any age really but particularly for mid-career women.

Great gift for myself and all my women friends and colleagues over 35!

I love Phyllis Horner's new book. I feel like it was written just for me (and all my women friends and colleagues over 35). When I read it, I was really struck by how useful it is not only for someone who is at mid-career but someone who is quite fulfilled and happy with where they are, such as myself. The first time I read it, I wanted to keep going (the real-life stories, including the author's, are easy to relate to), so I halfheartedly did the exercises. I'm now re-reading it and taking time to do the exercises thoughtfully so that I can assess whether I need to make any adjustments to my plan. Thank you for bringing this to women and giving us an easy and methodical way to make better choices for ourselves. What a great holiday gift!
