A crazy book about crazy people!

So freaking hilarious! I loved this book. It is roughly like a cross between Catch-22 and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It is an absurd satire of a mental hospital focused on the very ridiculous characters living and working in said hospital. They aren't so much treated as "untreated," because after all, in our for-pay medical system keeping people ill and medicated is good for the bottom line. Every case of cancer is good for the GDP. But that's not really the focus here so much as the silly banter between these deranged characters. I found myself giggling out loud while reading LBI. It's packed with so much wit and comedy, I had a blast reading it. It's not quite as absurd as Mark Leyner, but it has its moments that are outside reality. Which makes sense given it's about some patients detached from reality. But they are mostly sweet guys, and it's a charming read. Highly recommended!

Looney Bin Incorporated seems to me to be a brilliant blend of the artistry of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” with hints of the complexity of the southern Gothic style. The characters in this book pop off the page and become not simply some figment of the author’s imagination, but flesh and blood individuals who are hysterical as they are tragic. Rodgers’ keen eye misses nothing in satirizing our society- in its greed, sophomoric politics and its ill treatment of those less fortunate. But the real genius of this book is that, similarly to “A Confederacy of Dunces” you simply feel as you read, that it’s a story of a group of misfits and the larger points are not shoved down your throat, but rather sat at the table for the reader to consider. I will read this book again and again, it’s damned near perfect.

Charming, hilarious, and didactic!

A charming, humorous and witty tale that gently raises a mirror to society's foibles. An engaging novel whose absurdity will be a Rorschach Test for some, and a cautionary tale for others. Ms. Rogers' prose is delightful, suffused with references/homages to Dante, Becket, and even Monty Python. This is a rare book: One that will make you laugh constantly whilst forcing you to reflect upon your own mental well being. The characters are endearing and sympathetic, and you may find yourself empathizing with some of them! I wholeheartedly recommend it.
